Kathleen Hale is an autistic writer whose work spans longform journalism, books, essays, fiction, and television.

She is the author of four books: the young-adult mysteries No One Else Can Have You and Nothing Bad Is Going to Happen; the essay collection Kathleen Hale Is a Crazy Stalker; and Slenderman: Online Obsession, Mental Illness, and the Violent Crime of Two Midwestern Girls. Slenderman was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime and won the Society of Midland Authors’ Richard Frisbie Award for Adult Nonfiction.

Her reporting and essays have appeared in Vanity Fair, The Guardian, ELLE, VICE, Hazlitt, GQ, Vogue, CrimeReads, and elsewhere. Her feature on Gabby Petito ranked first on Vanity Fair’s 2022 most-read list. Her television credits include Netflix’s Outer Banks and Devil in Ohio. A Wisconsin native and graduate of Harvard University, Hale lives in Los Angeles. Her current writing and doctoral work focus on neurodiversity. She holds a certificate in twice-exceptional education and is pursuing a doctorate in education focused on cognitive diversity.
